Meenakshi Amman Temple is a historic Hindu temple located on the southern bank of the Vaigai River in the temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to Parvati, known as Meenakshi, and her consort, Shiva, here named Sundareswarar. The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2,500-year-old city of Madurai and is a significant symbol for the Tamil people, mentioned since antiquity in Tamil literature.[citation needed] Though most of the present structure was built between 1623 and 1655 CE. It is said that the temple was originally built in the 6th century BC by survivors of the Kumari Kandam.[citation needed] In the 14th century, the Sultanate Muslim Commander Malik Kafur plundered the temple and looted it of its valuables. It was rebuilt by the Nayak ruler Vishwanatha Nayakar around the 16th century. It was Vishwanatha Nayaka who rebuilt the temple in accordance to shilpa shastra. It houses 14 gopurams (gateway towers), ranging from 45–50m in height.
The most famous temple in Trichy that is dedicated to Lord Shiva is the Tiruvanaikkaval Temple located in Srirangam Island. One of the rulers of the Early Cholas dynasty, Kocengannan (Kochenga Chola) built this temple more than 1,800 years ago. Also known as the Jambukeswara temple, this temple has an underground water stream that apparently does not get exhausted even after extensive pumping out of water from this stream. The name Jambukeswara, also another name for Lord Shiva, came into existence because of the presence of the Jambul tree in its proximity.
Situated at Trichy, the Srirangam temple or the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple was constructed based on the ancient Dravidian architectural style. The Tamil literature series called Divya Prabhanda written by the Alvar saints from the 6th to the 9th century has magnified the significance of the Srirangam temple in their works. The temple is built on a massive 156 acres of land thus making it the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world. Even after undergoing several natural disasters over the years and suffering numerous invasions from armies, the temple still remains magnificent for viewers.
'Brihadeeswarar Temple (locally known as "Big temple") is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also known as RajaRajeswara Temple Rajarajeswaram and Peruvudayar Temple. It is one of the largest temples in India and is an example of Dravidian architecture during the Chola period. Built by Raja Raja Chola I and completed in 1010 CE, the temple turned 1000 years old .
The Rockfort temple, as the name suggests, is a hill fort in Trichy which is constructed on a rock which is about 83 m above the surrounding plains. This rock which is believed to be about a billion years old hence is considered to be one of the oldest of its kind in the world. Steep flights of steps, calculated to be about 450, has been cut into the rock in order to reach the top of the fort.
